A Wait to Remember: The Harsh Reality of Healthcare Delays in Public Hospitals
I recount my unfortunate accident and hospitalization experience in the Philippines when my Korean friends visited. Although I endured physical limitations and emotional trauma, I reflect on the invaluable lessons I learned during this challenging period.
Unfortunate Experience at Philippine General Hospital (PGH):
I express my disappointment and frustration with the slow process and lack of care at PGH. Despite my proximity to the hospital, I received no immediate attention and had to wait for 16 hours before receiving the treatment I desperately needed for my broken ankle. My detailed timeline showcases the delays and lack of urgency exhibited by the medical staff.
– 13:00: Registration completed
– 14:30: Preliminary check-up conducted
– 15:00: Visited the Record Section for scheduling
– 16:00: Initial orthopedic evaluation
– 18:00: Directed to undergo an X-ray
– 19:00 to 21:30: Faced repeated delays in obtaining X-ray results
– 03:00: Finally received prescription medication
– 04:00: Informed of the doctor’s unavailability for my scheduled first aid treatment, leading to another lengthy wait
Transition to Makati Medical Center (MMC):
Realizing the inefficiency at PGH, I decided to transfer to MMC for better care. I arrived at MMC at around 6:00 on August 6th, 2015. Upon arrival, I was promptly and efficiently treated. They efficiently conducted check-ups and x-rays and provided my ankle with the necessary first aid treatment.
By contrast, MMC provided comprehensive care within two hours of my arrival, including check-ups, X-rays, and immediate ankle stabilization.
Disheartenment for fellow patients at PGH:
While leaving PGH, I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic towards the less fortunate individuals who, due to their economic circumstances, had no choice but to endure the hospital’s subpar treatment. It saddens me that they remain without proper care, continuing to believe the empty promises made by the receptionist and doctors. I express my disappointment in the lack of importance given to patients at a well-regarded public institution like PGH, emphasizing the need for resilience and a second chance at life to receive any attention.
This experience highlighted the inefficiencies at PGH and the stark reality faced by less fortunate patients who, due to financial constraints, had no alternative but to endure the neglect.
Hope for improvement at PGH:
This journey underscored a harsh reality: access to timely and quality healthcare often hinges on financial capability. While I am grateful for the eventual medical attention I received, my heart goes out to those left waiting and suffering at under-resourced public hospitals like PGH.
Despite my negative experience, I hope PGH will realize the need for compassionate and efficient patient care. I desire the hospital to reevaluate its approach to handling emergencies or routine care with the passion and love that patients deserve.
Challenges at Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC):
This stark difference in care quality extended to my surgical experience. Initially considering the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC) for surgery, I encountered scheduling difficulties. Ultimately, I opted for East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) based on someone’s recommendations and a swift surgical operation scheduling. Indeed, I received prompt and effective surgical treatment, resulting in a successful recovery from multiple fractures and surgical procedures on my left ankle.
Hereunder is the diagnosis released when I was discharged from EAMC;
– Fracture, closed, complete, oblique, displaced, lateral malleolus, left
– Fracture, closed, complete, transverse, displaced, medial malleolus, left
– S/P Open reduction, Internal Fixation using plates and screws, lateral malleolus, left; syndesmotic screw fixation, left ankle; screw fixation medial malleolus, left (August 14, 2015)
I implore public healthcare institutions to enhance their patient care standards, ensuring timely and compassionate treatment for all, irrespective of financial status. The disparity between my experiences at different hospitals reminds me of the urgent need for systemic improvements in public healthcare.
I thank God for protecting my health and granting me this valuable experience. I emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and saving money for emergencies rather than solely relying on public hospitals. While my experience highlights the disparity in care between public and private hospitals, I extend my appreciation to MMC and EAMC for their attentive and efficient treatment.
